Root Melt vs Root Drag vs Root Blend
A root blend usually softens the colour close to your roots, a root melt creates a gradual transition into your lighter lengths, and a root drag takes the deeper shade further down. The names overlap between salons, so the most helpful thing to tell your colourist is where you’d like your blonde to start.

Depth close to the scalp
Gradual fade into blonde
Depth extended into mid-lengths
A root blend keeps blonde bright near your roots
We use root blend here to describe a light touch of colour close to the scalp, sometimes called a root smudge. It softens the point where your highlights meet your natural base. If you love a bright blonde and want your highlights to stay visible close to the parting, ask for a shallow blend.
A root melt creates a gradual transition
A root melt blends the deeper root shade into the lighter hair below. Your colourist may use an intermediate tone to connect the two so the change feels gradual. It’s a good option if your highlights look a little stark at the root or you want a softer, lived-in blonde with some depth at the crown.
A root drag takes the depth further down
With a root drag, sometimes called a root stretch, the deeper colour is worked further into the upper mid-lengths. More of the brightness sits through the lower lengths and ends. This can suit you if you want a more pronounced balayage effect or feel your current blonde comes up higher than you’d like.
Can I still keep bright pieces around my face?
Yes. Your colourist can keep selected pieces lighter around your face while adding more depth elsewhere. Bring a reference photo and point out where you want the bright pieces to start, especially at the parting and hairline.
Which gives the softest grow-out?
A shade close to your natural base usually makes regrowth less obvious. How soft it looks also depends on the contrast between your natural roots and your highlights, and where the colour is placed. We’ll look at your current colour and how often you like to visit before deciding on the placement.
